Canon EF 100mm 2.8 Macro USM Black:
The official marketing text of Canon EF 100mm 2.8 Macro USM Black as supplied by the manufacturer
Canon initiated the EF lens line in March 1987 as part of the innovative EOS system with the underlying development concept of fusing automatic and manual operation. Heralding a new era in SLR photography, the EF lenses with built-in focusing motors were the first to communicate completely electronically with the camera body. Followed by the high optical performance L-series, incorporating the silent Ultrasonic Motor (USM) and at a later stage the world's first interchangeable SLR lens with an image stabilizer, the EF lens series today is the largest line-up in the autofocus SLR world. This telephoto macro lens is capable of focusing to life-size (1X) without attachments. Although it replaces the EF 100mm f/2.8 MACRO lens marketed in 1991, it is a completely new design. It incorporates a ring type USM giving quiet, high-speed autofocus. The full-time mechanical manual focus gives very smooth manual focusing. For the first time in a 1X focusing telephoto macro lens, inner focusing is used. The lens length remains constant and a long working distance of 149mm makes worrying about getting too close to the subject unnecessary. Also, during focusing the front ring does not rotate making use of front-mounting accessories like macro ring lites simple and effective. "Three-group floating" focusing construction uses three independently moving groups, which holds focusing-related changes of aberrations to a minimum giving excellent image quality all the way from infinity to life size.

Lens system
Lens structure (elements/groups) *
The way in which a camera lens is constructed.
Focal length range (f-f)
Measure of how strongly the system converges or diverges light. For an optical system in air, it is the distance over which initially collimated rays are brought to a focus. A system with a shorter focal length has greater optical power than one with a long focal length; that is, it bends the rays more strongly, bringing them to a focus in a shorter distance. For an optical system in air, the effective focal length (f and f′) gives the distance from the front and rear principal planes (H and H′) to the corresponding focal points (F and F′).

A filter is a screen, plate, or layer of a substance which absorbs light or other radiation or selectively absorbs some of its components e.g. a UV filter to reduce UV light. Filters come in various sizes.

The 100mm ƒ/2.8 macro was one of the first lenses we reviewed here at SLRgear, and in reviewing the updated version of this lens, we noted some inconsistencies in our data for this lens. Accordingly, we sent the old lens back to the test bench, which conv...
Bottom line I'll stick with Dave's original assessment of the lens to wrap this one up: Without a doubt, the Canon EF 100mm ƒ/2.8 Macro is a superb lens. It's in a good focal length range for use as a portrait lens, but you may actually want to knock its sharpness do...
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USMThis lens is the more modest cousin of Canon's L-series version, which includes both image stabilisation (IS) and ultra-low dispersion (ULD) glass. It might therefore be expected to deliver a fairly ordinary performance, b...

The new Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens makes an excellent macro and portrait lens for digital or film photography. Yielding up to a 1:1 magnification, the EF 100mm f/2.8 offers a workable lens to subject distance of 5.9 inches at maximum magnifica...
Bottom line If you do close-up work, and you're looking for a good overall 2nd lens to go with that new camera, the EF 100mm f/2,8 Macro makes an excellent choice. Ideally coupled with a full-frame sensor film or digital camera, excellent results can also be achie...
The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM ($599.99 direct) is a telephoto lens for Canon cameras that can focus close enough to capture objects with true 1:1 magnfiication. It is adequately sharp, even at its maximum aperture, but does suffer from some optical i...
Good Sharp images. 1:1 magnification. Inexpensive.
Bad Prone to color fringing. Lens hood not included. No image stabilization...
Bottom line The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM may not be the company's top of the line macro lens, but it does capture sharp images with 1:1 magnification...
(From Canon lens literature) Autofocus lens for macro photography up to life-size (1x) magnification. Inner focusing affords a long working distance of 5.9in. (149mm) at 1x. A 3-group floating system results in excellent delineation at all focusing dis...
The Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM is a bit of a stunner. It has Canon’s typically reliable and tough build quality, and – because it’s also suitable for full-frame cameras – is the heaviest in the set. The optical train is made up of ten e...
Canon’s competitor in the 100mm Macro lens group is a popular lens, mainly as the overall length stays constant during focusing. We take a look at how it performs. Specifications Focal length 100mm Maximum aperture f/2.8 Min aperture f/32 Constructi...
Good Good build quality Very good optical performance Nice handling with no extending front element.
Bad A little pricey, but you get what you pay fr. Still no hood included in the price.
Bottom line There are virtually no criticisms of this lens that we can come up with! The build is a little short of L quality, but is still well built. The optical performance is first class with no nasty or disappointing surprises and as for the handling, it’s...
Good News: 1.) Spectacular optics! 2.) Super sharp. 3.) No distortion. 4.) Super-fast focusing. 5.) Goes to 1:1 in one twist. 6.) Ill say it again: spectacular optics! Bad News: None. This is a great lens! I love this lens. It does everything well an...
The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens is an excellent macro lens - and may be Canons most fun per dollar lens. Most macro lenses are sharp by their nature, and the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens does not disappoint in this area. This lens is s...
A 100mm macro lens has long been the standard for photographers using full-frame cameras. The magnification of the 100mm lens provides sufficient working distance from most subjects and does not add a lot of weight or bulk compared to shorter macro len...
Bottom line Canon delivers everything that a photographer could want in a 100mm macro lens: ultrasonic focus motor, internal focus mechanism, non-rotating front element, floating optical group for consistent image quality at different magnifications, rugged constr...
The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro was introduced back in march 2000 replacing the old EF 100mm f/2.8 macro (featuring a classic micro motor). On APS-C DSLRs the field-of-view resembles a 160mm full format equivalent. The primary application of the le...
Bottom line The old EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens had a superb reputation but Canon managed to keep up the performance of the USM successor despite of the introduction of a true IF design allowing to keep a constant lens length throughout the focus range. Mechanicall...
