D-Link's DES-6008 is a two-port 1000BASE-T Gigabit copper module specifically design for the DES-6000 switch. As a modular addition, the DES-6008 increases the DES-6000s support to deploy a Gigabit connection over a Cat5 cable to servers, workstations and other switches.
The DES-6008 2-port 1000Mbps adheres to IEEE 802.3ab, 802.1P, 802.1Q, and 802.3x protocols. With the 802.3ab, 1000Mbps of through put is enabled through existing copper wire utilizing existing Cat5 cabling. Through VLAN ID, the DES-6008, embraces both the 802.1P and 802.1Q protocol, which specifies a VLAN membership, by providing a means to encapsulate and prioritize untagged frames through a VLAN ID, with a buffer size of 2MB per port. With the 802.3x Flow Control, the DES-6008 initiates a pause control to stop incoming network traffic, further reducing network traffic. The DES-6008 also supports NWAY auto-negotiation with backpressure control at half duplex mode.

With a variety of supported layer 2 functions, the DES-6008 allows a Store-and-Forwarding method for packet switching, which receives the complete packet before any forwarding takes place. The DES-6008 supports Head-of-Line blocking and Broadcast Storm Protection, which gives the administrator the option to either forward or discard multicast packets on network segments further controlling network traffic.

Management functionalities can be accessed through the use of a RS-232 serial cable from the DES-6000 switch to configure SNMP support, embedded RMON agent to support enhanced traffic management and analysis, and a port configurable VLAN support to provide broadcast protection. Web-based management provides the ability to completely manage the switch from any web browser.
